Detroit Public Schools Give Students Stuff to Show Up for Enrollment Counting

DPS offers incentives to make sure students show up for count day.

Pizza parties. Gift cards. Breakfast and lunch for parents.

These are among the incentives Detroit Public Schools is offering to students and parents for the all important count day Wednesday. State aid is based on enrollment, particularly counts taken on the 2nd Wednesday in February and the 1st Wednesday in October. This year, the February data counts for 10% of a district's state aid, while the October data counts for 90%.

It's extremely important for parents to ensure their kids are in the classroom.

In DPS, every homeroom in grades K-8 that has 100% attendance will receive a pizza party at a later date. At each of the district's high schools, one student with perfect attendance will receive a $50 gift card. And all parents have been invited to have breakfast and lunch with their children.

On the menu: A breakfast of cereal, graham crackers, juice and milk; and a lunch of baked chicken with barbecue sauce, baked macaroni and cheese, seasoned greens, creamy coleslaw, a cornbread muffin, diced peaches and a beverage.

The district is also kicking off registration for a new Parent University program in which parents can take classes in student success, life skills, effective parenting and leadership.
