The Georgia Association of Educators, one of the state's largest education groups, has endorsed Stacey Abrams in the governor's race.

The association, which has about 30,000 members, scheduled a news conference Wednesday with Abrams at a school in East Atlanta to announce the endorsement.

The association said public education is at "a crossroads" in the state and "Georgia needs a true 'public education' governor to take the state where it belongs with regards to educating all of its children."

Abrams, a Democrat, is battling Secretary of State Brian Kemp, a Republican, in the race to become governor. Kemp is scheduled Wednesday afternoon to announce his school safety plan at an event in Buckhead.
