Arkansas Legislative Session Ends With Unfinished Business

Legislators formally adjourned the 2015 regular session, acknowledging that they will probably return at some point for a special session to address Medicaid expansion and other issues.

Arkansas legislators on Wednesday formally adjourned the 2015 regular session, acknowledging that they likely will return at some point for a special session to address Medicaid expansion and possibly other issues. Legislators also took care of a few final items of business, including swearing in a new state senator, voting to allow the Senate president pro tem to seek a second term and passing one bill.

The 81-day session began Jan. 12 and has been in recess since April 2. Gov. Asa Hutchinson has said he may call a special session to take up expected recommendations from a legislative task force that is looking for alternatives to the Medicaid expansion program known as the private option.

House Speaker Jeremy Gillam told reporters Wednesday he could envision other issues being taken up as well.

“Whether it be health care or whether or not we’re dealing with economic development or teacher insurance, whatever the topic is, we’ll have to see at the time what the governor is ready for,” he said.
