Ohio Legislature OKs Wrong Natural-Gas Language

Consumer advocates and businesses are fuming over a provision tucked into the new state budget bill that would allow natural-gas utilities to charge customers for a potentially wide array of environmental cleanup expenses.

Republican legislators inserted the plan following a push from Duke Energy and Columbia Gas of Ohio. It is now part of the budget bill awaiting Gov. John Kasich’s signature.

Lawmakers sought to ease concerns by agreeing to a series of changes to the proposal. But a miscommunication with Statehouse staff members means that the revised version is not the one that passed.
