Flag Fight Finale

The ever-changing state flag of Georgia may finally have a settled design. Voters in March overwhelmingly approved a flag proposed by the legislature last year, closing years of controversy over a Confederate emblem.

The ever-changing state flag of Georgia may finally have a settled design. Voters in March overwhelmingly approved a flag proposed by the legislature last year, closing years of controversy over a Confederate emblem.

During his 2002 campaign, Governor Sonny Perdue promised voters a referendum on the flag, which had been altered by Governor Roy Barnes the previous year ["The Two-Sided South," July 2003]. Some so-called flaggers are still pushing for a return to its 1956 design, but neither the legislature nor most voters seem to want to prolong the debate. "I think the air is out of their balloon," says University of Georgia political scientist Charles Bullock.
