South Dakota lawmakers underwent training Wednesday aimed at helping them understand and prevent sexual harassment in the Statehouse.

South Dakota lawmakers underwent training Wednesday aimed at helping them understand and prevent sexual harassment in the Statehouse.

The training put on by the National Conference of State Legislatures defined harassment and sexual harassment and laid out for the nearly 100 legislators in attendance what could be perceived as unprofessional behavior.

While leaders who sought out the training said the forum was successful, others raised questions about whether it was necessary.

Legislative leaders sought out the training following a national movement to report sexual harassment and assault. The effort also comes after an Argus Leader investigation found that dozens of women had experienced or witnessed harassment in the Capitol.
