Updated Government Job Totals

See how each level of government employment has fared in recent months.

Friday’s monthly jobs report suggests the economy had a dismal August. The Labor Department estimated that the economy added just 142,000 jobs last month -- the lowest tally so far this year.

For the most part, public-sector employment continues to remain flat nationally. State government payrolls ticked up by 1,000 jobs last month after declining by 6,000 in July.

If there’s one bit of good news for the public sector, it’s that localities continue to add jobs, albeit at a slow rate. Local government employment, which includes schools, has recorded gains each of the past seven months. In all, updated estimates suggest localities added 70,000 jobs this year up through August.
