State Sen. Colin Bonini brushed off a challenge from political newcomer Lacey Lafferty in the Republican primary for governor Tuesday, setting the stage to challenge Democrats' dominance of statewide offices in the November general election.

"I was out and about today and had a lot of support from folks all around the state," Bonini said. "I think people liked my message of change. All that support is gratifying."

Lafferty said she wished Bonini well, though she declined to endorse him.

"I'm at peace with it," Lafferty said. "I tried my hardest, mentally, physically and financially."

Lafferty loaned her own campaign more than $86,000. She had been campaigning for more than three years.
