Vermont to Create Scholarship for All New Babies

Under new legislation, Vermont Student Assistance Corporation will set aside $250 for post-secondary education for every child born to Vermont residents, or $500 for children born into families earning less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level.

Vermont has begun collecting college money for all baby Vermonters — starting with a $25,000 gift from Subaru of New England.

Ernie Boch Jr., the company's president and CEO, announced the donation Wednesday at a news conference with Gov. Peter Shumlin.

"Subaru of New England is extremely proud to give some of the first funds to this program," Boch said. "It's something that we believe in, and it's something that other businesses should do for Vermont."
