JACKSON, MISS. -- The star signifies the city's role as state capital, and the cross is a reference to the city's nickname, "Crossroads of the South." Before adopting this flag in 1993, the city unofficially used one designed by a local mall manager featuring the likeness of President Andrew Jackson.
