Little Headway In Ill. Debate Over Gambling Expansion

A debate over an expansion of gambling in Illinois is stuck in neutral, the Chicago Sun-Times reports, as Gov. Pat Quinn and the state legislature bicker over how the expansion should proceed.
"There's a chance that nothing happens," state Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi told the Sun-Times Wednesday. The legislature had passed a bill that would include a new casino in Chicago, five others around the state, slot machines at horse race tracks and more. But when Quinn made his opposition to that plan known, the legislature didn't even bother to send the bill to his desk.
Quinn proposed his own gambling package, which removed the slot machines and included a casino in suburban Cook County, according to the newspaper. Some lawmakers are opposed to the Cook County casino, as they say it would take business away from other nearby establishments.
So for now, it remains unclear if gambling will be on the legislature's docket when it meets in November.
