Gov. Martin O'Malley on Wednesday rejected the idea of following the lead of Colorado and Washington by legalizing and regulating the sale and use of marijuana in Maryland.
In a radio interview on the Marc Steiner Show, O'Malley said he was open to looking at expanded access to marijuana for medical purposes but opposes legalization of the drug for recreational use.
"I'm not much in favor of it," he said. "We've seen what drug addiction has done to the people of our state, to the people of our city."
One of the Democratic candidates to succeed O'Malley as governor, Del. Heather R. Mizeur of Montgomery County, has proposed legalizing marijuana and taxing it to pay for an expansion of early childhood education.
