Five More States Receive NCLB Waivers

Another five states will receive waivers from federal education mandates under No Child Left Behind, the U.S. Department of Education announced Friday, bringing the total number of waiver states to 24.

Another five states will receive waivers from federal education mandates under No Child Left Behind, the U.S. Department of Education announced Friday, bringing the total number of waiver states to 24.

Arkansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Utah and Virginia were granted waivers. As with other states to receive waivers, they must agree to implement various reforms outlined by the Obama administration, such as setting new student performance targets and developing intervention models for struggling schools.

Another 12 states and the District of Columbia still have waiver applications pending with the Education Department, and a handful more are expected to apply for waivers in September.

The Obama administration initiated the waiver program last fall when it became apparent that Congress would not immediately pass a bill reauthorizing NCLB. The waivers provide relief from some of the more difficult requirements of the education law (such as the 100 percent proficiency in math and reading deadline for 2014).
