GOP Governors Ask Super Committee To Avoid Shifting Costs, Raising Taxes

The Republican Governors Association asked members of the congressional deficit reduction committee to avoid shifting Medicaid to the states or increasing taxes.

The Republican Governors Association's leadership sent a letter Monday asking members of the congressional deficit reduction committee to oppose any plans to shift Medicaid costs from the federal government to the states or to raise taxes.

The letter -- signed by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels -- was addressed to the co-chairs of the committee, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas.

The governors asked for flexibility in reforming Medicaid spending and reduced regulations to jumpstart the economy. But most urgently, they warned of the damage that could result from costs being shifted to the states and the dangers of increasing taxes.

The full text of the letter is below.
