Whether it's mosquitoes and the West Nile Virus or birds and avian influenza, wildlife-borne diseases have often resulted in human pandemics. An online map makes it possible for government wildlife managers, veterinarians, medical professionals and educators to track wildlife diseases that threaten the health of humans and pets. The Global Wildlife Disease News Map, developed jointly by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the U.S. Geological Survey, is updated daily and displays pushpins detailing wildlife-disease events around the globe. The map allows users to browse reports of nearly 50 diseases and other health conditions, such as pesticide and lead poisoning, by disease type, affected species, geographic location and dates. The map news reports are pulled from more than 20 online sources and are provided in several formats including a blog, desktop widgets, e-mail and RSS feeds. The map first debuted in December, and was updated and expanded in March.
