Tapping the Tourism Cycle

Hoping to give its neighbor some friendly competition, Montana has launched a new tourism campaign targeting the niche audience of more than 6.5 million American motorcyclists.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brings half a million motorcycle enthusiasts to South Dakota each year in August -- the two-week event brought in well over $12 million in sales taxes last year. Hoping to give its neighbor some friendly competition, Montana has launched a new tourism campaign targeting the niche audience of more than 6.5 million American motorcyclists. The new efforts include a new Web site and a pilot project to expand signage advising motorcyclists about unfriendly road construction, and offer them detours before they drive into the construction zone. At the Web site, www.rideMT.com, readers can review 10 of the best motorcycle rides in the state, comment on them and suggest their own favorites. The site also offers safety advice, a frivolous quiz and links to travel alerts and road conditions.
