An estimated 2 million Pennsylvanians are smokers, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average smoker tries to quit at least seven times before succeeding. To help make the first -- or seventh -- time a success, Pennsylvania launched a new Web site last November, DeterminedToQuit.com. The site includes an online toolkit with information for individuals who want to quit smoking and an online "quit companion," which tracks participants progress with charts, provides a place for family and friends to send messages throughout the quitting process, and sends reminders to participants during times they usually smoke. The Web site also features tools to help successful quitters stay tobacco-free and a section for people who want to help a family member or friend quit. The site eventually will feature video blogs of people trying to quit to create an arena in which smokers can share personal tips and success stories.
