N.Y. Credits Military Experience for Jobs, Education

In transitioning to civilian life, vets may face difficulty in pursuing education or a career if civilian managers do not recognize how applicable and transferable military experience can be. New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recently launched an initiative to make it easier for veterans to get jobs and earn college degrees. As part of the "Experience Counts" campaign, New York's state and city public universities will implement new systems to flag veterans' applications as well as help to transfer military training and coursework into college credit, according to a release. The Cuomo administration will also make it easier for veterans to land certain jobs by swapping military experience for civilian skills. Veterans who trained and worked as military medics will get credit towards certification to be home health and nursing home aides; and those who drove trucks and heavy equipment while in the military can get a commercial driver's license without taking the road test.
