Mining Immigration Legislation

A free, searchable database of all immigration-related bills and resolutions introduced in state legislatures is now available to anyone seeking to better understand which immigration-related matters are of greatest concern to legislators.

In 2007, just over 1,000 immigration-related bills and resolutions were introduced in state legislatures nationwide, of which only about 16 percent were enacted into law. A free, searchable database of all immigration-related bills and resolutions introduced in state legislatures is now available to anyone seeking to better understand which immigration-related matters are of greatest concern to legislators; which types of bills have the highest or lowest passage rate; and the level of state activity that contracts versus protects the rights of immigrants. State Responses to Immigration classifies the bills by state, region, subject area, legislative type and status. Catalogued by the Migration Policy Institute in conjunction with a research team at the New York University, the database contains all 2007 legislation, with plans to add all immigration-related state legislation introduced since 2001, as well as for 2008.
