Green Button Initiative by Utilities Will Shrink Energy Bills

The button will offer customers one-click access to their data on the web

As part of their continued efforts to promote transparency, the Obama administration has announced the creation of a “green button” on utility provider websites. The button will allow consumers to have clear, secure, one-click access to their home or business data so that they can discover ways to reduce their energy use and save money. The industry-led effort emerged out of the success of the administration’s previous success with the Blue Button initiative that provides access to healthcare information in a single click. Each of the nine utility companies that have already agreed to participate have pledged to design their button using a common standard to insure uniformity and ease of use for consumers. The government expects that the rollouts of the button will happen in 2012 or 2013, depending on each company’s timetable and will reach fifteen million households in sixteen states.
