To help Connecticut municipalities collaborate more efficiently and effectively on regional projects, a council comprised of chief elected officials from the Hartford metro area has launched a program that gives municipalities free access to a Geospatial Information System. The program helps cities and towns that can't afford GIS systems with planning, zoning and other services. Maps are customizable, and draw on data from municipal parcel, land use and zoning records; aerial photos; wetlands and soils information from the state Department of Environmental Protection; FEMA Flood Plain data; and Census statistics. In two years, the Capitol Region Council of Governments will revisit the program. To learn more, visit www.crcog.org/gissearch.
