Each day between 1985 and 2002, Connecticut lost an average of 18 acres of forest and added 12 acres of development. To combat unchecked sprawl, the Office for Responsible Growth, established by Gov. M Jodi Rell in 2006, has launched a Web site to provide municipalities, state agencies, nonprofits, businesses and other organizations with a virtual toolbox of resources to plan and promote responsible growth community by community. Green and Growing contains a comprehensive inventory of policies, plans and programs. It highlights best practices and offers information on grant and loan programs, tax credits and technical assistance. Officials plan to expand the toolbox as agencies throughout the state develop and implement new approaches for responsible growth.
