A Big-Time Boost for Volunteerism

To add another $1 billion to its struggling economy, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has created a Cabinet-level position to oversee volunteer efforts in California.

At a value of more than $17 billion to the local economy, California volunteers donated 858 million hours of service in 2006. To add another $1 billion to its struggling economy, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has created a Cabinet-level position to oversee volunteer efforts in the state. The new Secretary of Service and Volunteering's job is to improve the coordination of volunteer programs and activities among the state's agencies and departments as well as raise the profile of service, encourage more individuals to become involved and help the state respond to residents' everyday needs as well as to natural disasters. The effort to encourage volunteerism will give its volunteers a voice at the highest levels of state government without adding any new net costs to the state budget.
