In addition to the decennial Census, the Census Bureau publishes annual state population estimates.

North Dakota's population registered a 2.2 percent uptick between July 2011 and July 2012, the largest increase of any state. The District of Columbia, Texas, Wyoming and Utah also recorded noticeable population gains.

The Census Bureau computes state population estimates using multiple data sets. These figures below, current as of July of each year shown, include birth rates, death rates and estimates of residents migrating from one state to another. (For a more detailed explanation, refer to the Census Bureau's methodology here)
