Public Transit Agency Ridership Statistics

Statistics tallied by public transportation agencies indicate Americans made more than 10.5 billion trips in 2012.

Rail, bus and trolley lines count numbers of unlinked passenger trips and report the data to the American Public Transportation Association. Ridership data shows trips on heavy rail systems increased 1.4 percent, light rail increased 4.5 percent and bus trips increased 1.2 percent for the year.

The statistics below refer to the number of trips taken in 2011 and 2012 for 113 rail, trolley and large bus systems. For all annual and quarterly data, please refer to APTA's ridership report.
