Annual fertility rates by state

States have generally experienced steady declines in fertility rates over the past decade.

The federal National Center for Health Statistics reports fertility rates as the number of births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. In 2015, South Dakota and Utah recorded the highest fertiltiy rates, with about 78 births per 1,000 women. By comparison, Vermont and New Hampshire reported the lowest rates at just over 51 births.
