The Latest State and Local Government Jobs Data

And how it has fluctuated in recent years.

The U.S. Department of Labor released updated jobs data Friday, suggesting state and local government payrolls changed little in October.

Over the summer, local governments recorded modest growth, adding an average of 22,300 new jobs per month from June through August. Local education employment, however, dropped by an estimated 29,000 jobs in September, resulting in a total net loss of 16,000 jobs for the sector. The latest federal estimates indicate employment at the local level remained unchanged last month.

Meanwhile, state government payrolls are reporting meager job gains, adding 5,000 to 6,000 positions each of the past three months. Colleges and universities account for most of the recent growth, according to Labor Department estimates.
