'Twas the Night Before Christmas: Finalist #2
Finalist #2 in our 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, Government edition contest is from North Carolina:
Twas' the night before Christmas, and all through the State each employee had been furloughed, and told they had to wait.
The checkbooks were empty, not a single red cent just barely enough to pay the late rent.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, while we as state employees were wondering how to afford Christmas in our heads.
And mamma in the kitchen, making soup beans, While I work a second job to just make end means.
When over at the legislature, there arose such a clatter, as their pork barrel projects continued to get fatter.
Away to the state I drove my old car,to try to keep my job, with many being sent away far.
The moon on the Capital gave it just a shine, hoping for us, no welfare line.
Me and my co-workers, all stressed in our cubes, had nothing to do but wait on budget news.
Now the governor in her Suburban, all tight lipped too, hoping we wouldn't have to close the State Zoo.
We sit back and hope for a real St. Nick, So I don't have to ride to work a pogo stick.
While the economy is sour, no money to be had, I thank the State for a job and oh I am glad!
