Strange Bedfellows

In the new issue of Governing, I write (6th item) about the potential opposition to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. I resisted the urge to write about his love life, but perhaps that was a mistake.

Although Newsom has been a proponent of gay marriage and universal health coverage, in San Francisco he is still seen as relatively conservative or at least too cozy with business for some tastes. But he has also been quite the bon vivant since his marriage broke up.

Newsom has dated a 19-year-old restaurant hostess/model (okay, she soon turned 20). Now it appears he had an affair with an appointments secretary. Who spilled the beans to her husband. Who was his campaign manager, but quit after confronting the mayor.

Can't wait for the reality show.

About

Written and compiled by staff writers and editors, GOVERNING View is an on-the-ground, and sometimes behind-the-scenes, look at the topics we're covering in print and online. From notes on what's up in statehouses, county courthouses and city halls, to encounters with people, places and things, GOVERNING View is a window into the side of state and local government you don't always see.
