Drumroll, please. Each year, we at Governing profile our Public Officials of the Year in the November issue of the magazine. We're announcing this year's winners for the first time, right now, in this very blog post. They are:

-Mitch Daniels, governor of Indiana

-Andrew Romanoff, speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives

-Rick Baker, mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida

-Craig Watkins, district attorney of Dallas County, Texas

-Joshua Sharfstein, health director of Baltimore, Maryland

-Lillian Koller, Hawaii's human services director

-Dan Lohrmann, Michigan's chief information security officer

-John Carter, housing inspector of Dayton, Ohio
