Lots of mayors support a proposal, which the U.S. House approved yesterday, to expand national service programs. The bill would boost the number of AmeriCorps volunteers to 250,000, to 75,000 now, and also include lots of programs for high school students.
I remember that back in the mid-1990s the Republican Congress would zero out funding for national service programs to poke at President Clinton, who had run on the idea and created AmeriCorps. Now the idea appears to enjoy deep bipartisan support.
