If You're A Happy State And You Know It...

Happyutah Utah is the happiest state;  West Virginia the least.

That's according to a Gallup self-reporting happiness survey.

Broadly speaking, there seems to be a "High Plains and Rocky Mountain High" stretching across much of the West. The Ozark/Appalachia Belt of Sorrow captures most of the down states. Not surprisingly, Hawaii has nothin' but sunshine.

Without further ado, Tom Waits' Emotional Weather Report.

Hat tip: Will Wilkinson, who abjures that happy states are all alike.

About

Written and compiled by staff writers and editors, GOVERNING View is an on-the-ground, and sometimes behind-the-scenes, look at the topics we're covering in print and online. From notes on what's up in statehouses, county courthouses and city halls, to encounters with people, places and things, GOVERNING View is a window into the side of state and local government you don't always see.
