Copping Copper

Add copper to the list of metals that are increasingly being stolen from the public domain, as high demand worldwide has tripled the price that recyclers pay.

A year ago, Governing wrote about the rampant theft of scrap steel and aluminum. Now, USA Today reports that vandals are making off with "everything from electrical wires to plumbing pipes to vases from grave markers."

Better hope that the Statue of Liberty is bolted down tight!

About

Written and compiled by staff writers and editors, GOVERNING View is an on-the-ground, and sometimes behind-the-scenes, look at the topics we're covering in print and online. From notes on what's up in statehouses, county courthouses and city halls, to encounters with people, places and things, GOVERNING View is a window into the side of state and local government you don't always see.
