President Obama's critics have accused him of being a Socialist, a Communist, a Fascist and, yes, a terrorist.

But in a recent Twitter post, Republican Colorado state Sen. David Schultheis has gone just a liiiiittle further:

Schultheis, for his part, wants you to know that you totally misunderstood him and he never intended to invoke United 93. From the Denver Post :

He said he was angry about the president's fiscal policies but didn't mean to compare him to the hijackers. The senator's reputation for strong speech gave readers the wrong idea, he said.

" 'Let's roll.' It's a comment people use all the time any more. 'Let's get going. Let's move on. Let's make major changes,' " Schultheis said. "I can see it now. But you're busy doing jillions of things during the day. You sometimes don't analyze every single word."

See? He just meant that Obama has hijacked the metaphorical fiscal plane. And that's what he's running into the ground.

And since we're all passengers on this "plane," we should...storm the cockpit and...force the plane to...wait, I'm lost.

I was a Senate staffer for 5 years there. Since then, that place has gotten so out of control. What about the Americn people? Work togehter and forget the partisianship.
Some of us didn't like President Bush either but you never saw this type of demagogry. He is an intelignet black President. Live with it.

You obviously never spent any time in the comments sections of Kos, Democratic Underground, or Huff Post. Insults along the lines of "Bushitler," "Chimpy McHitler"were commonplace.

Worse still, the mostly leftwing "truthers" were willing to look past all available evidence to see a conspiracy to kill 3,000 Americans at the highest levels of the Bush administration...a far more damaging form of expression that led many leading lights of the left, like a certain Van Jones, to sign off on petitions demanding actual government action/inquiry into a lunatic, baseless accusation.

Zach - I don't remember such strong denunciations of rhetoric directed at Bush-Cheney coming from this blog or the magazine. It's strange how the discussions of the awful "tone," or the threatening language used against an administration somehow spring forth from the media when there's a Dem in the Oval Office. I recall lots of that in the late-90s, when Clinton's media friends re-directed the incoming fire on stained dresses, etc. by complaining about the hypocrisy of the Rs, or the personal hostility to the Clintons led by the crazies at Free Republic, etc.

Anyway, I've belabored this but the point is that you can find some nut on a twitter account spouting something offensive at almost any minute of the day. State legislators should be wary of throwing that stuff around on a public forum...but it's a free country. Also, I guarantee you this guy is thinking "Joe Wilson" and fervently hoping the left goes nuts, targets him for defeat, and he gets to ring the register like old Joe.
