The 50 state legislatures include 7,382 legislative seats. I'm betting that few of the elections for those seats have served as proxy wars for a former president and a former presidential candidate, but that's the situation in Arkansas' 30th Senate district.
From the Associated Press:
GREENBRIER, Ark. - Arkansas' two political heavyweights _ former President Clinton and former Gov. Mike Huckabee _ are lending their names and the cachet that comes with them to a race for the Legislature that's becoming the marquee political battle in their home state.
...
The race, Democrat Joe White's bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Gilbert Baker, R-Conway, has already become the most expensive legislative race in the state this year, with the two candidates raising nearly $500,000 combined.
Upping that ante, Huckabee headlined a fundraiser with Baker on Thursday night. The former presidential hopeful strummed his bass guitar as Baker played on the drums before a crowd of about 500 people at a rally here.
...
Not to be outdone, White announced this week that Clinton -- who served 12 years as the state's governor -- had given the maximum $4,000 to his primary and general election campaigns.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
