Watertown Mayor: Hoffman Lost

posted by Alan Greenblatt

Votes are still being counted in NY-23, but it looks like Democrat Bill Owens is going to win this. He's up by 3 with 85 percent reporting.

Washington Independent talked with Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham -- a local Hoffman supporter -- tonight:

"We lost," said Graham. "The Scozzafava endorsement, the [Watertown Daily Times] endorsement of Owens-I mean, they roughed Hoffman up."

Could Hoffman still pull out a win? Graham grimaced. "It's over."

Can't wait to read the recriminations and finger-pointing on this one. I'll stick with my original argument -- undermine your party's candidate, don't be surprised if you lose.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
