The New York Times wrote a story about John McCain's relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman. You may have heard about it.
What interested me, though, was this description of Iseman's firm, Alcalde & Fay, in the Washington Post's story on the subject:
Its client list is heavy with municipalities and local government entities, which suggests that its major emphasis is on the controversial business of winning narrowly targeted, or "earmarked," appropriations.
What local governments entities in particular? The list ranges from Okaloosa County, FL and the city of Hobbs, NM (population: 29,292) to the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District in California and Hawkeye Community College in Iowa -- plus dozens more.
Everyone, it seems, has a federal lobbyist these days.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
