VA-GOV: McDonnell Wins

The Virginian-Pilot, among others, has the word that Republican Bob McDonnell will be the next governor of Virginia. Bill Bolling, the Republican incumbent lieutenant governor, won too.

Expected or not, these are really good wins for Republicans. They dominated in what just a year ago was the purest of swing states (and of course a place that Democrats ended up winning).

Now that it's official, everyone can get back to debating what this says about 2010, Creigh Deeds, President Obama and everything else.

My only thing to add is that no matter what Creigh Deeds' failings were as a candidates, it's hard to argue that Democrats should have nominated one of their two other primary aspirants. They did, after all, lose to Creigh Deeds.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
