The Down-Ballot Effect

Alabama2ndcd300px_e When was the last time you heard of a Democrat in the Deep South feeling encouraged because of the top of the party's national ticket?

Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright confirms reports that he is planning to run for Congress from Alabama's 2nd District.

Bright is a Democrat and the 2nd is heavily Republican but he has become convinced that Obama's strong showing in primary voting there -- the district is 29 percent African-American -- will help his cause.

Bright's campaign recently released a polling memo suggesting that a huge show of support from the African-American community could "add 3 to 5 points" to his margins against leading Republican opponents.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
