Should Palin Go to Iraq?

Off-the-wall idea: If Sarah Palin's lack of foreign policy experience becomes an issue, could she go on a foreign tour after the Republican National Convention? Most likely, the McCain campaign will want her on the trail, not overseas, but it would be an interesting gambit.

Palin, by the way, did travel to the Middle East last summer, as the Associated Press reported at the time:

There were no politics at play Tuesday when Gov. Sarah Palin made a surprise visit to Alaska National Guard troops stationed in Kuwait.

The war in Iraq has become increasingly unpopular with Americans and has led to eroded GOP support for President Bush, but Palin, a Republican, said she left politics out of the equation this trip.

"I'm not here to judge the idea of withdrawing, or the timeline," she said in a teleconference interview with reporters from Kuwait. "I'm not going to judge even the surge. I'm here to find out what Alaskans need of me as their governor."

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
