SurveyUSA has some ghastly approval numbers for Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels as he gears up for a run for a third term this year. Only 28% of Seattle residents approve of the job he's doing, while 61% disapprove.
Often, SurveyUSA's approval numbers seem to come down a bit harder on politicians than other polling firms (here's one example of that). However, the poll doesn't just show bad numbers for Nickels. It also shows a bad trend. A month earlier, SurveyUSA pegged his approval at 34% and his disapproval at 54%.
One reason for the decline: Seattle, by most accounts, botched its response to a December snowstorm. Nickels wouldn't be the first mayor to have a blizzard bury his reelection bid.
The question is whether Nickels, who's known nationally as a leader on environmental issues, will actually face a formidable challenger. The named being mentioned most often right now is developer Greg Smith, setting up the possibility for a Greg v. Greg dual.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
