Schweitzer Cruising

Montana's Democratic governor continues to lead in a new Rasmussen poll:

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer continues to hold onto a solid lead over his Republican opponent in his bid for re-election. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Schweitzer leading State Senator Roy Brown 56% to 32%. Libertarian candidate Stan Jones earns support from 3%.

When "leaners" are included, Schweitzer has a 59% to 35% advantage.

The Governor's lead was slightly higher last month, when he was ahead 61% to 32%.

The interesting thing about Schweitzer isn't that he's a popular red state Democrat. Popular red state Democratic governors actually are a dime a dozen -- Kathleen Sebelius, Brad Henry, Dave Freudenthal, Janet Napolitano, Joe Manchin, Phil Bredesen, Mike Beebe and Mike Easley, to name eight.

What makes Schweitzer unique is that he's been able to craft a national identity that is embraced by Democratic activists across the country, without losing his cred back home. His slogan ought to be, "Adored by conservative Montanans and liberal bloggers alike."
