Bob Poe says he is running for governor as a Democrat, and he's starting his campaign nearly two years before voters go to the polls.
Poe, a former state commissioner and past president of the Anchorage Economic Development Corp., is the first to announce for the race. Republican Gov. Sarah Palin hasn't said for sure whether she plans to run for re-election.
Poe, asked why he's announcing so early, said it gives him time to get out and meet voters. He cited a comment in the Alaska Ear, which, reporting on rumors he would run, suggested the first thing that people would ask is, "Who's Bob Poe?"
(Hat tip: Swing State Project)
Poe, or whoever is the Democratic nominee, won't have any trouble raising money from Democrats around the country. Of course, Palin won't have any trouble raising money either.
Poe's lack of name recognition probably wouldn't hurt him too much in a general election because the race seems very likely to be a referendum on Palin. For now, though, Palin would win that referendum quite easily.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
