South Dakota's Mike Rounds is the latest governor to come out in favor of eliminating legislative term limits. From the AP:
PIERRE -- A resolution that proposes a constitutional amendment to eliminate term limits for lawmakers and constitutional officers is being debated in the 2008 Legislature, and Gov. Mike Rounds says he supports part of it.
Term limits are needed for the governor and for constitutional officers, he said.
But limiting the terms for legislators has meant a loss of institutional knowledge, Rounds said.
"Term limits didn't do what people thought they would do," Rounds, who served in the state Senate for 10 years, said Monday on a Dakota News Network radio program.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
