Avery_06_sm The Shelby County, Tennessee, Commission just voted, 8-0, to elevate Joyce Avery to the chair. Incumbent chair Deidre Malone had sought a second year, but was denied.

This might matter more than usual, as Shelby County Mayor AC Wharton is running for mayor of Memphis. Incumbent Willie Herenton has announced he'll resign -- at first, by last week, but lately, by the end of the month.

Anyway, if Herenton steps down, the special election to replace him will happen Oct. 8, and Wharton is the favorite. If Wharton moves over to City Hall, Avery is now in line to replace him as the county mayor.

Was that confusing enough?
