In the Health Care Reform Debate, Governors Are Everywhere
Everywhere I turn in the federal health care debate, there's a governor.
-Governors' concerns about the expansion of Medicaid are front-page news.
-Twenty-one Democratic governors signed a letter supporting health care reform, while six didn't (Arkansas' Mike Beebe, Wyoming's Dave Freudenthal, Oklahoma's Brad Henry, New Hampshire's John Lynch, Missouri's Jay Nixon and North Carolina's Bev Perdue).
-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he supports President Obama's plans too.
-Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Republicans should offer their own ideas on health care reform, providing Democrats with a talking point. Then Jindal listed some of his ideas.
-Lastly, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, a Republican, says Congress should pass a bill this year. I mention that one because Thompson in endorsing President Obama's efforts, Thompson is acting with the partisan and ideological independence of a former elected official. In other words, despite being nominally undecided on a new campaign, he's not acting like someone who is running for governor in 2010.
