As expected, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon has won the Democratic nomination for governor in primary voting today.
It's still a little early to call the Republican nominee. Congressman Kenny Hulshof is leading state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, 49 to 44 percent, with 45 percent of the precincts reporting. But Tony Messenger of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports on the Political Fix blog that Hulshof's performance in the St. Louis suburbs is looking strong enough for him to carry the state, even though GOP-heavy Southwest Missouri counties are slow in reporting totals.
Republican Gov. Matt Blunt decided not to pursue a second term.

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
