How Asian-Americans Vote
When I was writing about voting trends in Gwinnett County, Georgia the other day, I wrote the following:
Plus, I'm not sure whether people of Korean or Vietnamese or Indian descent (as opposed to blacks and Hispanics) actually vote Democratic -- though I'd guess they'd be more likely to vote Democratic than white Southerners.
As usual, Ballot Box readers know more than I do. A comment from DCCyclone:
Josh, I'm Indian-American and very plugged into voting behavior issues, and I can tell you most Asian-American subgroups are Democratic, although to varying degrees.
Vietnamese are perhaps the most Republican of Asian-American subgroups, since most are anti-Communist refugees or children or grandchildren thereof, not unlike anti-Castro Cubans.
Indian-Americans vote Democratic probably by anywhere from a 2-to-1 to 3-to-1 margin, and slicing things down even smaller, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis are slightly more Democratic than that, roughly 4-to-1.
Other Asian-American groups also vote Democratic, and increasingly so over the past 15 years or so.
I don't know if clickable links display in comments on this site, but the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, or AALDEF, has conducted exit polls in elections specfically of Asian-Americans for several cycles, and here is their exit polling report for 2008: http://www.aaldef.org/docs/AAexitpoll2008.pdf
