Hollow Gesture

Ashburn State Sen. Roy Ashburn, one of six Republican legislators who voted for California's tax-raising budget deal, has become the first official target of a recall campaign, the Sacramento Bee reports.

This is a fairly predictable response, but will undoubtedly turn out to be an empty gesture. Conservatives unhappy with Ashburn's vote have until the end of September to collect 42,376 signatures to put his recall on the ballot. But Ashburn is term limited as of December.

When offices open out in California, maybe I'll call to find out whether there's even an election scheduled in his Bakersfield district in November.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
