Andrew Sullivan has a link up to video footage of Mitt Romney, posted a couple of days ago on YouTube, calling John McCain out as a liar and saying his tactics are a mistake. This seems like an amplification of current controversies about McCain and Sarah Palin lying about their positions and those of Barack Obama.
But I wonder. The footage isn't clearly dated and the remarks are short, without much context provided. Which made me think that this could be an old clip of Romney expressing anger at McCain back in the primary, when it was pretty clear they couldn't stand each other.
In the footage, Romney makes a reference to the NY Times, the Washington Post and Bill Bennett all having opined that McCain was wrong and should apologize. Bill Bennett? I haven't heard his name mentioned among those criticizing McCain lately.
Very quick Googling turned up this video of Bennett calling on McCain to apologize for hitting Romney "below the belt" back. That was back in January. Meanwhile, news of Romney calling McCain a liar -- which would be big news -- doesn't seem to have broken anywhere else.
I think Andrew Sullivan got played on this one.
Update: Commenter Benjamin points out that DailyKos confirms the Romney footage is from January.
Further update: Sullivan has taken down the video and posted a correction.
